Trying a tele-lens for the first time
Tiergarten Hannover | Fujifilm X-T5 + XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 R LM OIS WR
Rented the Fujifilm XF 70-300 because I’m planning a trip to the Alps and needed to know if I could handle the beast. Spoiler: the lens is great — it’s me who needs training.
So I took it for a spin at Tiergarten Hannover, thinking, “How hard can it be to shoot deer (with a camera)?”
Very.
I hadn´t even walked that far into the park when i saw a glowing shape between the trees. My first deer of the day… an albino one. Or it´s just white.
Pretty sure I´ve never seen a white deer before. I stood there half frozen, half scrambling to get a shot - whispering to myself (and cursing too), don´t mess this up, don´t mess this up.
I was wrestling with the camera and the lens like I’d just unboxed them five minutes ago — which, honestly, wasn’t far from the truth. ISO? Completely off. Shutter speed? as if i was trying to take a picture of a sloth. Aperture? Doing its own thing. Focus? Locked firmly on a tree in front of the actual subject, like a very confident mistake.
Luckily, the deer was hungry enough to keep calmly chewing the grass while I fumbled around — long enough for me to finally get a decent shot.
Turns out there wasn’t just one white deer—there were a few more lurking around. I followed the first one to its little posse and shot them all… with my camera.
At first I didn’t know why it was standing like that. I thought it was just how deer pose when there’s a camera around—it was not the only one doing that pose. But when you zoom in, you can see—it was doing number one.
The lady stopped as a few deer crossed the pathway. She looked genuinely delighted to witness the moment. I’m not sure the deer shared the same sentiment though… But I’m really happy with this shot.
She paused mid-step, gave me the stare, and I swear I heard her say, ´You got your shot, now leave me alone´. One of my best shots of the day.
The white deer might be the influencers, but this one´s the chill cousin who knows all the forest gossip.
Group pic vibes, but everyone´s thinking: we´re being watched!
This skin pattern isn´t camouflage - it´s couture!
If elegance was a herd.
The deer squad, patiently waiting for the princess to show up and start singing. I´m really really proud of this shot… and also the editing.
These shots were never about chasing perfection — they were about experimenting, making mistakes, and learning on the fly. Looking back, I’m actually pretty amazed at how they turned out. I spent quite a bit of time editing them, trying to find a style and mood that really struck something inside me whenever I looked at them. Hopefully, you’ll feel a bit of that too when you see them.
I’ll share more about my experience with the lens — but that’ll have to wait until after my trip to Bavarian Alps.
If you’re curious about the look and feel of the edits, I’d be happy to share my Lightroom presets—just reach out.
